Age Calculator
Your exact age in years, months and days, plus days lived and the countdown to your next birthday.
Dates
Defaults to today
Everything is worked out in your browser from the dates you type. Nothing is saved or sent anywhere.
This works out exactly how old you are from your date of birth. It returns your age in years, months and days, not just the years.
You can also set the second date to something other than today, which answers questions like how old you will be at a wedding, or how old someone was on a particular date.
How age is actually counted
Your age is the number of complete years since you were born. The key word is complete: you are 25 right up until the moment your 26th birthday arrives, even the day before.
That is why age in years alone is a blunt answer. Two people who are both 'aged 25' can be almost a year apart, which matters for school years, sports categories, insurance bands and medical dosing.
This calculator gives the full breakdown in years, months and days, so you get the precise figure rather than the rounded one.
What to enter
- Date of birth
- The day you were born. The calculator handles leap years and different month lengths correctly.
- Age at date
- Defaults to today. Change it to work out an age on any other date, past or future.
How old you are in 2026, by birth year

- Turns 46 in 2026

What this assumes
Age is counted the Western way, starting from zero at birth. Some countries count differently, which the FAQs cover.
Dates are treated as calendar dates, so time zones and hours of birth are ignored.
How to calculate your exact age
Subtracting birth year from current year gets you close, but it is wrong for roughly half the year. Here is the reliable way.
- the minus 1
- The part people forget. It applies for everyone whose birthday falls later in the year
Subtract the years. 2026 − 2000 = 26. This is the age you will reach during the year.
Check whether the birthday has passed. Compare the month and day against today's. If your birthday is still ahead, you are still a year younger.
Count the months and days. From your last birthday to today. That is what turns '26' into '26 years, 4 months and 12 days'.
See a worked example: someone born on 1 January 2000, on 3 September 2026
- Date of birth
- 1 January 2000
- Today
- 3 September 2026
2026 − 2000 = 26.
Their birthday in January has already passed this year, so no adjustment is needed.
From 1 January to 3 September is 8 months and 2 days.
So they are 26 years, 8 months and 2 days old, which is 9,742 days in total.

Frequently asked questions
You turn 38 during 2026. Whether you are 37 or 38 right now depends on whether your birthday has already passed this year.
That is the catch with birth-year maths: subtracting the years gives the age you reach *during* the year, and for anyone with a later birthday it is one too many until the day arrives.
They turn 19 in 2026, so they are either 18 or 19 depending on the date.
Enter the exact date of birth above and it resolves this properly, rather than leaving you a year either side.
Legally you age normally: you turn one year older every year, whether or not the date exists. Most jurisdictions treat 1 March as the birthday in common years, though a few use 28 February.
A true leap-day birthday only comes round every four years, but not always: 1900 was not a leap year and 2100 will not be either, because century years are only leap years when divisible by 400. That is why 2000 was one.
Traditional East Asian age reckoning counts you as 1 at birth, and everyone gains a year at new year rather than on their birthday. So the same person could be 25 in one system and 26 or 27 in another.
South Korea officially moved to the international system in 2023, but the traditional count is still used socially. This calculator uses the international method.
Count the days between the two dates, which is what this calculator does. Someone born on 1 January 2000 had lived 9,742 days by 3 September 2026.
You cannot get it by multiplying years by 365, because leap days add up: over 26 years that is roughly a week's difference. The date calculator counts the days between any two dates directly.
Change the second date from today to whatever date you want. It works forwards and backwards.
Useful for checking whether you will meet an age requirement by a deadline, or how old a child will be when they start school.
Problems people actually run into
Subtracting the years and stopping there
2026 − 1988 = 38, but that person is only 38 if their birthday has already passed. For roughly half the year, the honest answer is 37.
This causes real trouble on forms with age cut-offs, sports age categories and eligibility dates, where being out by one is the difference between qualifying and not.
